Maggie Brown (New Zealand)

The small dinghy, rock-dashed on the shore, was far past repair.

But they have a garden in mind, this couple that live in the bach, who laboriously drag the splitting hull up to their bare section. Plump succulents are envisaged scrambling fore and aft, with Californian poppies bobbing amidships in dappled orange dance.

So sad then, that this vision remained a dream; for he was lost at sea the next day and all her energy was sapped by the salvage.

A dinghy lies in quiet decay beneath an overgrown Ngaio. Twisting limbs permit only a tremble of mourning sun.
